Who we are

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is a local charity working to create a Yorkshire rich in wildlife for everyone. The Trust believes Yorkshire should be rich in wildlife for the benefit of everyone with more wildlife, more wild places and more people having a strong connection to nature. Role 1: Practical Conservation Task Day - Barnsley / Dearne Valley Location: Dearne Valley Country Park, Pontefract Road, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S71 1HS Details: Would you like to get stuck into some outdoor conservation work? Join us for a day of practical habitat management in the Dearne Valley Country Park. Position details Duration – Every Friday & some Saturdays Opportunity type: Outdoor Conservation - Wider Countryside Work Party What you should bring: A packed lunch and plenty to drink. Hard-wearing shoes, boots or wellies Old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Waterproofs, sunscreen and insect repellent when necessary, you never know what the weather will do! Tools and gloves will be provided. Role 2: Willow Tit Surveyor Location: Dearne Valley, Various Survey Sites Do you have good bird identification skills? If so we need your help with our Back from the Brink Willow Tits Project. Small and quietly coloured, the willow tit is the UK’s most threatened resident bird. We’ve lost 94% of them since the 1970s, and they are now extinct in most of their former haunts in the south and south-east of England. But not in the Dearne Valley where the connected landscape of favourable habitat is providing a stronghold for the species... Position details Duration: Friday 1 February 2019 - Monday 1 April 2019 Commitment: Any Day Frequency: Fortnightly Opportunity type: Surveying / Monitoring More information: This Back from the Brink project, led by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and RSPB, will help willow tits in the Dearne Valley by ensuring there is good habitat for them, and improving their ability to move between the landscapes. Annual surveys will allow us to monitor the impact of our work on habitats. We need to understand better what sorts of areas this bird likes best, and how much of it they need to thrive. We need volunteers with specialist expertise to use their skills to survey specific sites around Barnsley and record whether willow tits are present.
